Prepare the grain and the rest of the ingredients from the list.
Rinse the barley, clean it from debris, and soak it in cold water at a ratio of 1 liter of liquid per 1 cup of grain. Soak for at least 4 hours, but preferably 8-10 hours.

Cut the meat into cubes.

Fry the meat and onion in vegetable oil.

Fry the soaked grain in vegetable oil with a piece of butter. This will make it even more crumbly or thick.

Transfer the barley into the pots with the meat and vegetables.
Pour in water or broth, add salt and spices, cover with a lid, and place in a cold oven. Set the temperature to 180 ℃ and cook for 1 hour 20 minutes. Half an hour before it's done, check the amount of liquid in the pot and add more if necessary.
