Nowadays, there are many different variations of preparation, but we will return to the classic and beloved version. Usually, the salad uses a whole herring, which is then filleted. But there is not always time for this, so you can use ready-made fillets.

  • 200 g herring
  • 2 pcs potato
  • 2 pcs beetroot
  • 1 pc onion
  • 1 pc carrot
  • 2 pcs egg
  • 180 g mayonnaise

  • Prepare the specified ingredients. Beets, potatoes, and carrots need to be boiled in advance. To do this, wash them and, without peeling, put them in a pot with cold water. Cook until tender after boiling. It is preferable to cook beets in a separate pot, as they take much longer to cook than other vegetables. Eggs should also be hard-boiled.

  • Cut the herring fillets into small pieces and place them on a plate. Finely chop the onion and spread it in a thin layer on top. If your onion is too pungent, you can scald it with boiling water beforehand. Spread mayonnaise on this layer and each subsequent layer.

  • Peel and grate the boiled vegetables and eggs. Place a layer of potatoes on top of the herring and onion.

  • Then distribute the boiled eggs. You can set aside some yolk and sprinkle it on top of the finished salad according to your preference.

  • After the eggs, add a layer of boiled carrots.

  • Spread a layer of mayonnaise on top of the salad and refrigerate for at least two hours to allow it to soak. Then remove the cooking ring, if used, decorate the salad according to your preference, and serve.
